Impact of time-dependent deformation on geomechanical risk for geologic carbon storage

چکیده

This paper investigates the consequences of time-dependent deformation on stress changes and resulting geomechanical risks from injection CO2 into geologic reservoirs. Using 3D fully coupled fluid flow-geomechanics simulations, it is shown that when occurs in caprock, shear decreases caprock but increases reservoir. The magnitude this transfer to reservoir affected by characteristic time scale adjacent formations. Compared an elastic response, viscoelastic produces a higher possibility fault failure within during after injection. implication if neglected assuming purely behavior risk will be underestimated.

abstract: about 60% of total premium of insurance industry is pertained?to life policies in the world; while the life insurance total premium in iran is less than 6% of total premium in insurance industry in 2008 (sigma, no 3/2009). among the reasons that discourage the life insurance industry is the problem of adverse selection. adverse selection theory describes a situation where the inf...

Earthquake triggering and large-scale geologic storage of carbon dioxide.

Despite its enormous cost, large-scale carbon capture and storage (CCS) is considered a viable strategy for significantly reducing CO(2) emissions associated with coal-based electrical power generation and other industrial sources of CO(2) [Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (2005) IPCC Special Report on Carbon Dioxide Capture and Storage. Geologic Storage of CO2

Dynamic imaging provides an effective way to integrate previous time-lapse data with current data in order to estimate a current model. We present two methods useful for continuous dynamic reservoir and subsurface monitoring. The first method is a stochastic method for the inversion of geophysical data. It uses the ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF) that we demonstrate using time-lapse surface seism...

Comparison of geomechanical deformation induced by megatonne-scale CO2 storage at Sleipner, Weyburn, and In Salah.

Geological storage of CO2 that has been captured at large, point source emitters represents a key potential method for reduction of anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions. However, this technology will only be viable if it can be guaranteed that injected CO2 will remain trapped in the subsurface for thousands of years or more. A significant issue for storage security is the geomechanical respon...

Coupled fluid flow and geomechanical deformation modeling

Accurate prediction of reservoir production in structurally weak geologic areas requires both mechanical deformation and fluid flow modeling. Loose staggered-in-time coupling of two independent flow and mechanics simulators captures much of the complex physics at a substantially reduced cost.
